From warm, nostalgic reds to earthy greens and soft neutrals, the sofa colours making waves this year promise to remain stylish well beyond the next season.

Whether you’re refreshing your living room or investing in a new statement piece, understanding the key colour trends can help you select a sofa that complements your home’s personality and stands the test of time. Snapshot: What’s Trending Right Now

The top 5 colours in living rooms

Living rooms in 2025 are embracing a palette that balances calmness with warmth. Blue continues to dominate as one of the UK’s most beloved colours for living spaces. Its versatility and timeless quality make it a safe yet stylish choice, with around 40% of design consultations requesting blue-themed rooms, according to Ideal Home.

Cherry red is also making a bold statement, especially as an accent colour during the colder months. This shade adds vibrancy and warmth, breaking away from the cooler, more sterile tones that have dominated in recent years. Meanwhile, earthy tones such as warm taupes and deep greens are gaining traction, offering a grounded, nurturing atmosphere. These colours not only evoke a sense of comfort but also create a connection to nature, which is increasingly important in today’s fast-paced world.

Soft neutrals like off-white and beige remain popular, but with a warmer undertone, moving away from the stark greys and whites of previous years. This shift reflects a desire for spaces that feel more inviting and personal, rather than clinical. Lastly, rust and terracotta accents are becoming increasingly sought after, lending a cosy, retro vibe to interiors. These hues resonate with the trend of embracing vintage aesthetics, allowing homeowners to create a space that feels both nostalgic and contemporary.

How these trends translate to sofas

Sofas are no longer just functional furniture pieces; they are central to interior design statements. The rising popularity of blue in living rooms means navy and deep blue sofas are a favourite choice, offering both calm and sophistication. Earthy greens, inspired by vintage trends, are also emerging as the “new neutral” sofa colour, providing a rich, inviting tone that pairs well with natural materials. These colours not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also promote a serene environment, perfect for relaxation after a long day.

Cherry red is a standout option for those wanting to inject personality in to their sofa colour and warmth into their space. This colour’s nostalgic charm, reminiscent of 1970s retro aesthetics, makes it a unique yet enduring choice. Sofas in warm taupes and greige continue to appeal for their versatility and ability to blend seamlessly with various décor styles. Furthermore, the trend towards sustainable materials means that many of these sofas are now crafted from eco-friendly fabrics, appealing to the environmentally conscious consumer.

Finally, the shift away from grey sofas is notable. Grey, once a staple of minimalist interiors, is now seen as cold and uninspiring. Instead, textured fabrics and warmer hues are preferred to create inviting, lived-in spaces that feel both stylish and comfortable. The use of plush upholstery, combined with unique design elements such as curved silhouettes and bold patterns, is redefining the traditional sofa, making it a focal point that reflects the homeowner’s personality and taste.

Trend Tones with Staying Power

Earthy greens & sage

Earthy greens, including sage, are enjoying a renaissance in 2025 interiors. This trend, inspired by vintage styles and nature, is perfect for those who want a sofa colour that feels both timeless and fresh. Deep green sofas, reminiscent of the iconic 1964 photo of Cliff Richard lounging on a green sofa, are being hailed as the “new neutral” by designers looking ahead to 2026 and beyond. This rich, earthy hue complements a variety of colour schemes and adds depth to any room.

Green tones also evoke a sense of calm and connection to the outdoors, aligning with the growing trend towards biophilic design. Pairing a sage or deep green sofa with natural wood accents and plants creates a harmonious, nurturing environment that invites relaxation and comfort.

For those considering this trend, it’s worth noting that green sofas work well in both modern and traditional interiors, making them a versatile choice that won’t quickly date.

Warm taupes & greige

Warm taupes and greige (a blend of grey and beige) continue to be popular for their understated elegance and adaptability. These tones offer a softer alternative to stark greys, bringing warmth and subtle colour variation to living spaces. They act as a perfect backdrop for bolder accent colours, such as cherry red or rust, without overwhelming the room.

In bedroom design, there’s a noticeable shift away from cool whites and greys towards warmer whites with yellow or pink undertones and soft beiges, which translates well into living room and sofa colour choices. These hues create a nurturing, inviting atmosphere that feels both modern and timeless.

Choosing a sofa in warm taupe or greige ensures a piece that blends effortlessly with changing décor trends, making it a practical investment for those who prefer a more neutral palette.

Ink/navy & deep blue

Blue continues to be a dominant colour in UK interiors, with ink and navy shades leading the charge. These deep blues offer a sophisticated, calming presence that works well in both contemporary and classic settings. Their versatility is a key reason why about 40% of design consultations request blue themes, according to Ideal Home.

Ink and navy sofas make a strong statement while remaining neutral enough to coordinate with a wide range of accent colours and textures. They are particularly effective in larger living rooms where they can anchor the space without overpowering it.

These shades also age gracefully, ensuring that your sofa remains relevant and stylish for years to come.

Rust/terracotta accents

Rust and terracotta tones are increasingly popular as accent colours that add warmth and character to interiors. These shades evoke a retro charm and natural earthiness that complements the broader trend towards warmer, more nurturing colour palettes.

Incorporating rust or terracotta through cushions, throws, or even a statement sofa can enliven a room without making it feel too bold or overwhelming. These colours pair beautifully with warm taupes, greiges, and deep blues, creating a balanced and inviting space.

As the UK moves into winter 2025, red accents—including rust and terracotta—are particularly on-trend for adding impact and vibrancy, as highlighted by Ideal Home.

Charcoal & soft black

While grey sofas are falling out of favour due to their association with cold, minimalist interiors, charcoal and soft black remain popular for those seeking a darker, moodier aesthetic. These shades offer depth and sophistication without the sterility of lighter greys.

Charcoal and soft black sofas are versatile and can be paired with a variety of textures and colours to create a cosy yet modern look. They work especially well in spaces that receive ample natural light, balancing the darkness with brightness elsewhere in the room.

Choosing these deeper neutrals can provide a timeless foundation for your living space, allowing for easy updates with accessories and accent pieces over time.

Off-white/bouclé (care notes)

An off-white sofa colour, particularly those upholstered in bouclé fabric, are gaining popularity for their soft, tactile appeal and understated elegance. Bouclé’s textured surface adds visual interest and a sense of luxury, making it a favourite among designers.

However, it’s important to consider care when opting for lighter colours and textured fabrics. Off-white sofas require regular maintenance to keep them looking fresh, and bouclé can be more delicate than smoother fabrics. Investing in protective treatments and being mindful of usage can help maintain their beauty.

Despite these considerations, off-white bouclé sofas offer a timeless, chic option that fits well with the warmer, more nurturing colour trends of 2025.

FAQs

Are bright colours a mistake?

Bright colours, such as cherry red, are not a mistake when used thoughtfully. In fact, cherry red has emerged as a major colour trend for 2025, celebrated for its nostalgic and emotionally expressive qualities. It works particularly well as an accent colour, adding warmth and vibrancy without overwhelming a space.

For those hesitant about committing to a bold colour, incorporating bright hues through cushions, throws, or smaller furniture pieces can be a great way to experiment. When balanced with neutral or earthy tones, bright colours can enliven a room and reflect personality without dating quickly.

What hides stains best?

When it comes to hiding stains, darker and patterned fabrics generally perform better than light, plain ones. Colours like deep blues, charcoal, and earthy greens are excellent choices for sofas in busy households or homes with pets and children.

Textured fabrics such as bouclé can also help disguise minor marks and wear, though lighter colours may still require more frequent cleaning. Avoiding very light shades like off-white if stain resistance is a priority is advisable, unless you’re prepared for regular upkeep.

Will bouclé date quickly?

Bouclé is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity due to its cosy texture and sophisticated look. While trends can be unpredictable, bouclé’s classic appeal and versatility suggest it won’t date quickly if chosen in timeless colours like off-white, warm taupe, or soft grey.

Its tactile nature adds a layer of interest that complements many interior styles, from modern to vintage-inspired. Proper care and maintenance will also extend the lifespan of bouclé upholstery, ensuring it remains a stylish choice for years to come.

This the second time we have bought a sofa from here and the whole experience was great from start to finish. Owen was so helpful in the store and we had sorted a sofa and foot stool in just a few minutes, considerably cheaper than anywhere else. It was delivered the next day, yes the next day, and Owen and Will whisked our old sofa away and installed the new one almost instantly. This has got to be the best way to buy a sofa anywhere.

Delivered 2 days later by Sam and Ben who were really helpful and pleasant, they made sure it was in the exact spot before they left. Kept me informed re delivery time too. Best sofa buying experience ever and saved money over buying it from one of the big stores. Thank you 👍

We recently purchased a sofa from S2 Sofas in August and had a really positive experience from start to finish. The in-store service was excellent — we were given plenty of space to browse without feeling pressured, which made a big difference. The team were also incredibly accommodating and even stayed open later for us when we couldn’t arrive until near closing time, which we really appreciated. Delivery was smooth and arrived exactly as scheduled. A special mention to PERRY and OWEN, who delivered our sofa — they were fantastic. Really friendly, down-to-earth, professional, and just genuinely easy to get along with. They made the whole process stress-free. Overall, a great experience and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend S2 Sofas.

I cannot believe I'd only just came across this sofa shop recently. The quality of the sofas are unbelievable with massive savings . Purchased a leather recliner sofa with matching chair. Honestly you can tell it's such an expensive rrp priced sofa (i actuallysaved around £3000 on the rrp price more than half price). The showroom is excellent over several floors. All in clear view for you to see. Staff are so efficient and polite with excellent knowledge of each sofa. (I was asking a lot of questions before committing as I needed the exact requirements for my spine) . Nothing was too much trouble and everything explained clearly . Will and Owen were my delivery drivers. I purchased a sofa at 11am and this was in my home by 4pm in doncaster. Both young lads were extremely polite and respectful in my home . Even kept adjusting the sofa so it was in perfect view of the tv even though it wasnt there home ha. But those little things matter and show there customer service is to a high level . Thank you so much will definitely highly recommend you to other people in the future. What a gem of a place ✨️
